MyCare’s guide to NDIS-funded activities in Brisbane

We’re here to help

Call 07 3521 8048 to discuss our services with our friendly team.

As one of Brisbane’s leading providers of NDIS and supported living services, we know how important it is to be able to find the right resources and activities.

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) aims to empower individuals with disabilities to have greater choice and control over their lives, to help improve their independence and social participation, and to access the support they may need to live fulfilling, self-sufficient lives. This is why understanding how you can best utilise the kinds of assistance that fall under the scheme can be so important for the well-being and empowerment of all NDIS-certified individuals.

Let’s break down some of the key facets of the NDIS fund, and how it can best be used for your benefit when it comes to finding the right NDIS-funded activities in Brisbane:

What is the NDIS fund?

The NDIS is overseen by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA), which supports the independence of people with disabilities by assisting with such things as finding a place to live, assistance with daily living, and helping with community outreach and social activities.
The NDIS operates by assessing each individual’s eligibility based on:

  • Assessing the general impact of their disability
  • Setting plans and goals that are personalised to their physical and social benefit
  • Regulating the right service providers
  • Conducting regular reviews to ensure the right ongoing support and alignment for each person

How to apply for NDIS

To start with your NDIS application, it’s important to first check your eligibility criteria to make sure you apply under their guidelines. The NDIS is available for applicants who:

  • Are under 65 years of age
  • Have a permanent or significant disability that affects daily activities
  • Are an Australian citizen
  • Live in an NDIS-covered area

You should also gather any necessary documentation, such as medical reports and support details, before contacting the NDIA for an Access Request form.

Once completed, you can then submit the form for assessment, which will lead to a planning meeting where your goals and support needs are discussed. Upon approval, your personalised NDIS plan is then developed, which will allow you to access funded supports and services as per the details of your application.

Remember, your plan can be reviewed and adjusted over time to accommodate changes in your circumstances in order to most correctly ensure ongoing alignment with your goals and needs.

Activities and support funded by the NDIS

NDIS support services are generally sorted by how they fall into one of three basic pillar categories, which are:

Core

These supports are based on what benefits the general daily living and activities of NDIS participants.

Capital

Capital is what falls under support for investment, such as specialised equipment, assistive technology, and modifications for homes and vehicles.

Capacity Building

Capacity building encompasses any support that helps empower participants to build their independence and general living skills.

These categories are used to determine how best a payment can be used to benefit NDIS participants. This is then further broken down into their placement within a framework of up to fifteen classes of activities and general assistance, which include:

Assistance with daily life

Support with tasks such as personal care, meal preparation, household chores, and hygiene routines.

Transport

Funding for transport services that help enable participation in community, social, and other general daily life activities.

Employment support

Assistance with finding and maintaining employment, which can include everything from job coaching, skills training, workplace modifications, and other supported employment programs.

Home modifications

Adaptations to living spaces to improve safety, accessibility, and functionality for individuals with mobility or sensory impairments.

Therapy support and rehabilitation

Services such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and psychology services help improve physical and cognitive functioning, which can include activities such as hydrotherapy, sensory integration therapy, and training in communication skills.

Assistance with social and community participation

Funding for participation in social, recreational, and community-based activities, which can include everything from sports clubs, art classes, music therapy, and general group outings.

Education and skill development programs

Training courses and programs aimed at enhancing social skills, communication, leisure, and independent living skills through such activities as cooking classes, art therapy, performance, and sports.

Activities that aren’t supported by NDIS

It’s important to remember the guidelines of NDIS support as illustrated above, and that the NDIS won’t fund or support claims that fall outside of these general specifications.
More specifically, the NDIS cannot fund activities or claims that:

  • Are not related to disability
  • Do not support day-to-day living or support costs
  • Might fall under the responsibility of a different government or support service
  • Pose the possibility of harm or risk to the participant or others

It’s good to keep in mind the general strictures of the NDIS support fund, since any funding is most useful when it is for the benefit of general day-to-day living or independent support. If the intent of the claim might be better suited to a different department, such as Healthcare or Education, it’s probably better to investigate those administrations instead.
